Crate Training: Building Your Puppy's Safe Haven
A crate is the foundation of happy puppyhood — we strongly recommend crate training for every Fairytail Forest puppy. Here's everything you need to know to make the crate your puppy's favourite spot in the house.
💡 The Golden Rule: A crate isn't a cage — it's their safe space, their bedroom, their calm place when the world feels a bit too big.
Choosing the Right Crate
We use X-Large crates from Kazoo, which easily fit two dogs (Boxers love company). Similar options — often more aesthetically pleasing — are available from K-Mart and other retailers. Look for:
- Size: Large enough for your adult Boxer to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably
- Ventilation: Good airflow on all sides
- Double door: Gives you flexibility for placement
- Removable tray: Makes cleaning accidents much easier
Setting Up Before Arrival
Set the crate up before your puppy comes home. After they've done the rounds and understood the lay of the land, let them take their first nap in the new crate so they start to see it as their own space.
Crate Essentials Checklist
- ✓ Padded mattress or vet bed
- ✓ Soft toy (something with siblings' scent if possible)
- ✓ Safe chew item
- ✓ Removable, machine-washable cover
- ✓ Water bowl (for longer stints)
The Training Process
We can't recommend crate training highly enough. Done right, your puppy will love their crate — it becomes a den, a place they choose to go when tired or overwhelmed.
Feed meals in the crate
Toss treats in randomly throughout the day. Let them discover that good things happen inside.
Start with short periods
Begin with the door open. Gradually close it for a few minutes while you're nearby.
Build up gradually
Extend the time slowly. Never use the crate as punishment — ever.
Night-time routine
Some crying the first few nights is normal. A comfy bed, a toy, and a chew will help them settle.
The Rest of the Basics
A dog bed (or two), multiple water bowls — Boxers are enthusiastic, messy drinkers! — and a small toy rotation round out the essentials:
- A chew toy for teething — save your shoes 🥿
- A well-loved soft toy to rest their chin on
- A tug toy for bonding play
- A Kong-style throw toy — great for their shorter muzzles
- In summer, a float toy for pool or river swimming 🏊
A soft adjustable collar and lightweight lead are essential from day one, alongside their microchip.
Why this matters: A crate-trained dog travels more easily, copes better at the vet, and is far less likely to develop separation anxiety or destructive habits. It's one of the best gifts you can give your Boxer — and yourself.
