General Health Checklist: When to Call the Vet or Breeder
Knowing what's "normal" for your Boxer is one of the most valuable skills you'll develop as a puppy owner. This guide helps you read the signs — and know when it's time to call for backup.
✅ Starting strong: Your puppy was vet-checked and cleared before leaving us. Unless we've told you otherwise, they're free of parasites, heart murmurs, or other detectable issues, and both parents are health tested and cleared for breed-relevant conditions.
Signs of a Healthy Boxer Puppy
This is your baseline. A thriving puppy should show all of these:
Eyes
Bright, clear, no discharge. Alert and responsive to movement.
Nose
Clean and slightly moist. No crusting, discharge, or persistent dryness.
Gums
Pink (not pale, white, or bright red). Press gently — colour should return within 2 seconds.
Energy
Appropriate for age — playful bursts followed by deep naps. Not lethargic, not hyperactive.
Appetite
Eager at mealtimes. Finishing meals (or nearly). Interested in treats.
Stools
Firm, well-formed, brown. No blood, mucus, or extreme odour.
Toilet Troubleshooting Guide
Stool consistency tells you a lot about internal health. Here's what to look for:

Food changes cause stomach upsets. This is why we don't recommend sudden diet changes — but if diarrhoea appears more than once, or there's any blood involved, call your vet or us (or both).
Behaviour & Mood Red Flags
Boxers are famously expressive dogs. A sudden behaviour change is often the first sign something's wrong:
Withdrawn or unusually quiet
Boxers are clowns by nature. A puppy who stops wanting to play or interact may be telling you something's off.
Loss of appetite
Missing one meal happens. Missing two or more, or refusing treats? That's worth a call.
Excessive sleeping (even for a puppy)
Puppies sleep a lot — but if they're hard to wake, uninterested in play, or seem lethargic, pay attention.
Restlessness, pacing, can't get comfortable
Can indicate pain, discomfort, or distress — especially if this is new behaviour.
Excessive thirst or urination
Drinking way more than usual or needing to go constantly can indicate several conditions.
The "Trust Your Gut" Rule
You know your puppy better than anyone else after just a few weeks together. If something feels wrong — even if you can't articulate exactly what — it probably is. We would always rather take your call and have it be nothing, than not hear about something that turns out to be important.
📞 Call Us First
We know this puppy, their parents, their history. Often we can tell you over the phone whether something needs urgent attention or can wait for a scheduled appointment.
🏥 Your Vet
For anything acute, concerning, or worsening — don't wait. Puppies deteriorate faster than adult dogs, and early intervention makes all the difference.
